Celebrate Juneteenth: June 19th
Freedom Day, Cel-liberation Day, Emancipation Day. Juneteenth goes by many names, but it means one thing, freedom. This annual holiday celebrates the liberation of slaves in the United States on June 19th, 1865. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in 1863, in some confederate states, including Texas, slavery was still in effect until the Union Army, under General Granger’s command, took over in Galveston, Texas in 1865. With the arrival of the Union Army, 250,000 slaves became free. The following December, the 13th Amendment was ratified stating that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”. This formally ensured the end of slavery.
To this day, Juneteenth is celebrated, with parades, picnics, barbeques, Juneteenth pageants, and the raising of the flag of freedom (seen above) to celebrate the event.
