NEA Big Read All Pueblo Reads features Tim O’Brien author of "The Things They Carried"
Pueblo City-County Library District’s 16th annual NEA Big Read All Pueblo Reads will feature award-winning novelist Tim O’Brien, author of the Vietnam War novel, The Things They Carried. PCCLD is a recipient of a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host NEA Big Read in Pueblo.
O’Brien’s book The Things They Carried is a fictionalized account of a U.S. Army platoon fighting on the ground during the Vietnam War. The collection of short stories is based on O’Brien’s own combat experience during the war. The Things They Carried was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the book’s publishing. O’Brien also authored nine books of fiction and was a reporter for The Washington Post.
The companion book for younger readers in grades 3 through 7 is What Was the Vietnam War by Jim O’Connor. A part of the Who Was series of books, What Was the Vietnam War explains for younger readers the myriad events surrounding the Vietnam War and the United States involvement in it.
