Keeping your children’s brains active is majorly important, but sometimes the weather can put a pause on our plans. We’ll be updating Seasonal themed STEM activities to give you some ideas to keep you and your little ones entertained even if you’re stuck inside! Our first Winter themed activity is creating your own Snow Dough:
You can make your own snow dough using just 2 ingredients: Corn-Starch and Shaving Cream OR if you want something safe to eat (just in case), you can use Corn-Starch and Vegetable Oil.
If using Shaving Cream, you’ll want to do about equal parts whereas you may need more vegetable oil than corn-starch. You can also add in some food coloring to have different colors to play with! Just a heads up, this was not the cleanest activity, but it sure was fun to play with!
The Corn-Starch / Shaving Cream mix was silky smooth, looked more like snow, but was perfumy. The Corn-Starch / Vegetable Oil was a tad sticky but built things better. It just depends on your preference! As you can see from the pictures, I added WAY too much Vegetable Oil in the mixture my son and I played with ( I originally used 2 cups).
The ‘recipe’ we used:
- 2 Cups of Corn-Starch
- ⅓ Cup of Vegetable Oil *(or equal parts shaving cream to corn-starch)
- Food coloring of your choice (optional)
- Flat open surface or sensory tub
- Mix and play!
