About the book
The Things They Carried is a fictionalized account of a U.S. Army platoon fighting on the ground during the Vietnam War. The collection of linked short stories is based on O’Brien’s own combat experience during the war. The Things They Carried was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the book’s publishing. About Tim O'Brien
He was born in 1946 in Austin, Minn., and spent most of his youth in the small town of Worthington, Minn. He graduated summa cum laude from Macalester College in 1968. From February 1969 to March 1970 he served as infantryman with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
After his discharge from the army, O'Brien pursued graduate studies at Harvard University. He worked as a national affairs reporter for The Washington Post from 1973 to 1974. O’Brien currently is professor of creative writing at Texas State University.
