Spring is in full bloom at Pueblo City-County Library District as April brought a chance to build community through plant swaps, a chess tournament, contest celebrations and other programs throughout the month.
To kick off the month, we celebrated creativity by awarding the Dr. Seuss Character Contest on Thursday, April 2. Participants, grades preK-12, had the challenge of creating Dr. Seuss characters and writing a brief description of them. There were a total of 679 entries and 38 winners!
“Oh, the places they went with their imaginations! We were absolutely dazzled by talent and creativity when we hosted our Dr. Seuss Contest Awards Ceremony with 104 people in attendance.
From clever rhymes to vibrant, Seussian-inspired artwork, our local young creators proved that ‘your imagination is a place that can take you anywhere,’” said PCCLD’s Program and Events Manager Amanda Dalie.
What’s a plant swap but a great way to build communities? During April, PCCLD held three plant swaps at Barkman, Giodone and Pueblo West branches. Participants came with their plants to share clippings and expand collection of house plants with clippings from their friends and neighbors.
“It was really nice to have so many people excited to come for a craft event and leave with a smile on their face,” said Adult Program and Outreach Specialist Penny Jerman
Chess is a game of strategy and respect and the crew at Kardknox Gang Prevention and Intervention is doing the work in the community to understand youth and adults’ perception of the world that surrounds them. On Friday, April 17 at the Patrick A. Lucero branch. More than a dozen youth participants gathered for a Chess Tournament.
“We extend a huge thank you to Mark Salazar from Hardknox Gang Prevention and Intervention, as well as the Pueblo Chess Club, for organizing such an amazing community event that brought together nearly 20 student participants. Prizes were awarded to first, second, and a three-way tie for third place—what an incredible turnout! Your support and dedication are truly appreciated,” said Patrick A. Lucero Branch Manager Jerry Vigil.
Hardknox Gang Prevention and Intervention has the goal to promote positive change internally and mentally. Through the game of chess, they’re able to teach how to create a cost vs. benefit analysis when it comes to decision making. Doing this allows participants to not make impulsive decisions and to think about their next moves and the consequences or rewards waiting on the other side of that decision.
