Read Out Loud is an annual event inviting all 4th grade students in Pueblo County to read the same book at the same time, followed by an in-person visit from the author.

This year’s book selection is Katie the Catsitter by Colleen AF Venable.

Venable is also the author of Hamster and Cheese, and coauthor of Cat Ninja.

There are three sessions available for 4th grade classrooms to attend: 8:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

The author talk will consist of a 45 minute presentation to discuss how she got started writing graphic novels, and how to inspire kids through promoting creativity and a love for reading! Q&A will follow.

Space is limited! Classrooms that attend the author talk will receive one copy (per teacher, while supplies last) of Katie the Catsitter, a teacher instructional guide and fun classroom activity.

Colleen AF Venable is the author of indie bestseller Katie the Catsitter graphic novel series with Stephanie Yue (nominated for 14 state awards), as well as the National Book Award Longlisted Kiss Number 8, a graphic novel co-created with Ellen T. Crenshaw. Her other books include The Oboe Goes Boom Boom Boom with Lian Cho, The Swayze Year with Meghan Daly, Mervin the Sloth is About to Do the Best Thing in The World with Ruth Chan, and the Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye series, also with Stephanie Yue. Colleen splits her time between Brooklyn, New York, and an old house in North Adams, Massachusetts that she’s rebuilding with friends. When she’s not writing books, she can be found working at animal rescues, rollerskating, building things, and getting very excited when she spots a frog.

Katie is dreading the boring summer ahead while her best friends are all away at camp--something that's way out of Katie and her mom's budget, UNLESS Katie can figure out a way to earn the money for camp herself. But when Katie gets a job catsitting for her mysterious upstairs neighbor, life get interesting. First, Madeline has 217 cats (!) and they're not exactly . . . normal cats. Also, why is Madeline always out EXACTLY when the city's most notorious villain commits crimes?! Is it possible that Katie's upstairs neighbor is really a super villain? And who's this boy she keeps talking about?!), AND crack the biggest story in the city's history? Some heroes have capes . . . Katie has cats!
