I'm Praying Hard For You by Linda McCaffrey

I'm Praying Hard For You gives a biographical account of the World War II experiences of Dr. Bill Brenner, a US Army doctor who was taken prisoner by the Japanese during World War II and his devoted wife, who remained in California with their young son. The book documents the Bataan Death March and the devastation of a Japanese death camp through the eyes of the doctor and it tells the story of the couple's unfaltering faith and love through nearly four years of separation.

Outstanding Women's Awards: Accepting nominations now!

Pueblo City-County Library District is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Outstanding Women's Awards. For the past 30 years, these awards have celebrated women's accomplishments in our community and the important role that women have played in Pueblo's history. The nomination criteria is simple. The woman must be a resident of Pueblo County currently or during the time the award honors. The person does not have to be living to be honored. The awards will be presented during Women's History Week, at the Outstanding Women's Awards luncheon on Friday, March 9 at noon. All organizations are invited to participate in this awards luncheon.

Nomination forms are available at all Pueblo public libraries and online. Nominations must be received by Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at 5 p.m. Nominations may be mailed or delivered to the Community Relations Department at the PCCLD's Rawlings Public Library, 100 E. Chautauqua performances: Civil War Stories Abraham Lincoln

It's estimated that more than 186,000 men of color fought for the Union as soldiers in the Civil War. Angus Augustus Burleigh, a 19th century ex-slave, served in the 12th Regiment of the 108th United States Colored Artillery and went on to become an acclaimed black educator and minister. Hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Less than a month after Lincoln was elected President in 1860, the nation plunged into four long years of Civil War. Lincoln knew that to survive as a nation, and to protect the right that "all men are created equal, " we needed to make terrible sacrifices. The ESL course will help students improve their listening, speaking and pronunciation skills. Students will learn to understand more English that they hear commonly and learn to speak more clearly. Making sense of the American Civil War

What's your perspective? How does perspective change history? Join this conversation as we discuss the book March by Geraldine Brooks, a historic fiction novel that explores the Civil War. Afterward, record some of your own history with memoir-writing instructor Dawn DiPrince. Reading the book is not required to attend and participate.

Experience the elegance of the Victorian period with a dance performance by the Victorian Society of Colorado Springs. A presentation and discussion on a selection of readings from America's War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on their 150th Anniversaries and Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam - The Battle That Changed the Course of the Civil War will follow. Reading the books are not required to attend and participate.

Are you thinking of becoming a citizen of the United States? The first step is to prepare for the citizenship test. The citizenship test includes writing, reading and a civic history questionnaire. The Pueblo City-County Library District's Adult Literacy Program serves native English speakers and English language learners who want to improve their reading, spelling, writing and comprehension skills. We offer one-to-one tutoring, conversation clubs for English-language learners, pre-GED study groups and a collection of books and instructional materials designed for adults at all skill levels. The Help

You've seen the movie, The Help, but did you know that it was based on a best-selling book? It is 1962 and Skeeter has just graduated from the University of Mississippi. Her mother is determined to have her married and settled down, but Skeeter has other ideas. After her beloved maid, Constantine, is dismissed, she decides to write a story that will reveal the truth about how African-American maids were treated in the south. She must face both issues - the challenge of encouraging the maids to share their stories and the criticism of her friends, when the story is published. Please join us for a lunch-time discussion of both the movie and the book.

Practice speaking English at this weekly conversation club. This is an informal club and is open to adults from all language backgrounds and skill levels. Group sessions include lively discussions and activities that deal with topics selected by participants. This club is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Please call 553-0206.

Download e-audiobooks and e-books @ the library through OverDrive!

The Pueblo City-County Library District is pleased to offer OverDrive, a digital library collection. The online, digital library service is offered through PCCLD's website. With this service, patrons may download all types of e-audio books and e-books. Selections can be downloaded to personal laptops and desktop computers, e-readers, digital tablets, smart phones, MP3 players and other devices.

In order to download, special technology is required. To use OverDrive, you must have an Internet-ready computer or mobile device and a valid library card. The free OverDrive software that will need to be downloaded to your computer is available through PCCLD's website. If viewing on a computer, certain models of e-readers will need to download Adobe® Digital Editions software available free on Adobe's website.

To download, users need to log onto PCCLD's digital library at downloadables.pueblolibrary.org. Then search by title, subject, author or publication format. You can then add items to your cart or place on hold and check out your digital materials. Once materials have been selected, you can click "get for Kindle®" or "download" to enjoy your title. Computer Basics - Feb. 6
This course will overview computer equipment (mouse, monitor, keyboard, etc.) and discuss operating a computer (turning on/off, accessing programs, using the mouse and using the keyboard) This is a very basic course intended for those who are not familiar with computers. Internet Basics - Feb. 13
little to no experience using the internet to access the World Wide Web. This class will provide an introduction to web searching and using the internet to gather information. Topics include common browsers, search engines, navigation and security. Registration is required by calling 562-5601.

Email Basics - Feb. 27
This course is meant for the computer novice who has never used email. This session will discuss setting up an email account using one of the free email services. Topics include creating an email account, sending messages and managing your inbox. Registration is required by calling 562-5601.
