StoryLine Volunteer

Position Description: 

Children love hearing stories, but not every child has someone to read to them. By volunteering your time and talent you will bring more than a good story to the listener, you can give them encouragement and brighten their day! StoryLine Volunteers read and record stories on a phone line that anyone in the public can call to enjoy the very important learning experience of being read to aloud and reading in general.

Time Involvement: 
4 hours per month
Qualifications: 
Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age
Ability to read English or Spanish with fluency, enthusiasm and animation at an 8th grade level.
Self-motivated and ability to work independently
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions directions accurately
Interest in children’s stories; knowledge of picture books helpful
Responsibilities: 
Select children’s books to read aloud and record
Practice reading selection prior to recording
Using a telephone, record one story at a time to create a bank of stories to be reviewed and activated by Youth Services Staff
Keep a list of stories used
Training: 
Orientation to the library including all applicable policies and procedures.
Individual or small group training with Youth Services Staff to learn location of children’s materials and the StoryLine recording process.
