Volunteer will be responsible for assisting customers with the use of the library’s assistive technology workstations on an appointment basis.
Length of Commitment:
6 months minimum
variable & based on appointment requests; each appointment lasts 30-60 minutes
Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age
Patience and good communication skills
Ability to demonstrate and teach use of equipment
Enjoy working with individuals with disabilities
Experience using a personal computer and working knowledge or willingness to learn of at least one of the following software programs: <ul> <li>JAWS screen reading software</li> <li>OpenBook print/scanner reading software</li> <li>Zoom Text screen magnifying software</li> <li>Dragon Naturally Speaking speech recognition software</li> <li>Read and Write Gold text to speech / literacy software</li> <li>WYNN Wizard text to speech / literacy software</li> </ul>
Provide assistance for individuals with disabilities using adaptive hardware and software, magnification devices and other equipment.
Provide assistance with resources such as the online catalog, electronic databases, and the internet.
Orientation to the library including all applicable policies and procedures.
Training on the use of the library’s online catalog, web page and electronic databases.
Introduction to the use of specialized adaptive equipment.
